Motorway Tolls in Serbia: A Rental Car Guide
Many motorway journeys from Belgrade use toll roads. The system is straightforward once you know whether the rental vehicle uses a ticket or an electronic TAG.
Ticket-based payment
Roads of Serbia operates a closed toll system on motorway sections. With manual payment:
- take the magnetic card when entering;
- keep it in the vehicle;
- hand it to the operator at the exit;
- pay the amount calculated for the distance and vehicle category.
Do not lose the card. The official authority warns that the longest route and additional procedure costs can be charged when the correct entry cannot be established.
Electronic TAG
Some rental vehicles may have an ETC/TAG device. Use only the marked electronic lane and ask in advance how charges are recorded and settled. Do not assume the device is active merely because it is attached to the windscreen.
Check current rates
Prices can change and depend on entry, exit and vehicle category. Use the official Roads of Serbia toll calculator before travel rather than copying an old amount from a blog.
Before departure
Confirm whether the car has TAG, which category it uses and how toll expenses are paid. Keep cash or a supported payment card available as backup and follow signs at each station.
