Belgrade to Niš by Car: Route, Tolls and Rental Advice
Niš is a natural base for exploring southern Serbia. The motorway makes the trip straightforward, while a rental car gives flexibility for stops and travel beyond the city.
Route and tolls
Use live navigation and allow time for traffic when leaving Belgrade. Serbian motorways use a closed toll system: take the entry card and hand it over at the exit, unless the car has ETC/TAG. Toll prices depend on distance and vehicle category; use the official Roads of Serbia calculator.
Prepare the vehicle
A comfort car is useful for the longer motorway journey, although an economy model is sufficient for one or two travellers. Confirm fuel type, mileage and support contact before departure. Take breaks and never plan the return too tightly.
Visiting Niš
Niš is an important cultural and historic centre in southeast Serbia. Plan parking before entering the centre and check opening times for the places you intend to visit. The National Tourism Organisation lists Niš among Serbia’s principal cities and highlights its position between East and West. See the official cities overview.
If continuing towards another country, obtain rental approval and documents before leaving Serbia.
